December 4, 2025An Epic Rwanda–Uganda Safari: From Kigali’s Hills to the Nile’s Thunder
This East African journey is the kind of safari that changes you, an immersive blend of culture, wildlife, rainforests, volcanoes and sweeping savannahs. Over two weeks, you explore two of Africa’s most biodiverse countries: Rwanda and Uganda, following a route that takes you from Kigali’s calm modernity to the misty mountains of the Virungas, deep into tropical forests, and across iconic national parks filled with raw beauty.
Here’s the full, detailed day by day experience:
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – The Heartbeat of Rwanda
Your adventure begins in Kigali, a city perched on rolling green hills, known for its safety, organization, and emotional depth. After meeting your driver-guide at Kigali International Airport, you embark on a city immersion tour.
Highlights:
Visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a reflective introduction to Rwanda’s history.
Stop at Kimironko Market, buzzing with colorful produce, crafts, and fabric stalls.
Drive through Kigali’s spotless streets lined with bougainvillea.
Optional coffee tasting at a Kigali café—Rwanda’s Arabica is among the best in Africa.
You settle into your lodge for a restful evening as the sun turns the hills golden.
Day 2: Journey to Nyungwe Forest – The Rainforest Awakens
After breakfast, you depart Kigali for Nyungwe Forest National Park, a 5-hour scenic drive through Rwanda’s famous terraced hills, tea plantations, and lakeside landscapes.
Visit to the King’s Palace Museum (Optional)
Halfway along the route, you stop at the traditional Rwandan King’s Palace in Nyanza to explore the beautifully reconstructed royal huts and the royal long-horned cows (Inyambo).
Arrival in Nyungwe
Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests—thick, ancient, and teeming with biodiversity. Mist hangs between the towering trees, and the air smells of earth and leaves.
Later in the afternoon, you take on the iconic Nyungwe Canopy Walk, suspended high above the forest.
Canopy Walk Experience:
160 meters long
70 meters above the forest floor
Views of treetops stretching endlessly
Chance to spot blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and countless bird species
You return to your lodge, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking – A Wild Morning in Nyungwe
Before dawn, you gather at the Uwinka or Cyamudongo trailhead for a chimpanzee trekking briefing. Equipped with hiking boots, rain jacket, and anticipation, you plunge into the forest.
The Trek
The hike through tangles of vines, bamboo, and moss-covered trees can be exhilarating. Chimps move fast, but expert trackers communicate via radio to locate the troop.
Suddenly, you hear their excited pant-hoots—the forest comes alive.
Face-to-Face with Wild Chimps
You watch chimps feed, groom, run, and swing through the canopy. Infants cling to their mothers while dominant males assert their presence. Spending time with them feels almost like reconnecting with a distant family.
After the trek, the afternoon is free for:
A waterfall hike
A birding walk (Nyungwe has 300+ species)
Relaxing at the lodge with views over the rainforest
Day 4: Musanze – Golden Monkeys & Volcano Landscapes
After breakfast, you leave the forest and head north toward Musanze, Rwanda’s gateway to Volcanoes National Park.
En route, the Virunga Mountains begin to reveal themselves—majestic volcanic cones rising dramatically above green fields.
Golden Monkey Trek
In the afternoon or the next morning (depending on timing), you enter the bamboo zones of the park to track the Golden Monkeys, found only in the Virunga region.
They are energetic, curious, and incredibly photogenic. You watch them nibble bamboo shoots, leap between branches, and gather in tight family groups.
Musanze town is alive with culture, buzzing with warm hospitality, artisan craft centers, and beautiful mountain scenery.
Day 5: Crossing into Uganda – Arrival in Kisoro
Today you leave Rwanda and cross into Uganda via either Cyanika or Chanika Border, a smooth transition between two friendly nations.
Welcome to Uganda’s Switzerland
As you descend into Kisoro, the landscape feels like a blend of alpine beauty and volcanic drama. Rolling hills, crater lakes, traditional homesteads, and the towering Virunga volcanoes create postcard views.
The air is cool and crisp, and the evening sky glows pink behind the mountains. You check into your lodge and rest before meeting the mountain gorillas tomorrow.
Day 6: Gorilla Trekking – Rushaga or Mgahinga
This is the soul of your safari.
Briefing and Trek Start
After a morning briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you join your trekking group and venture into the deep forest.
Depending on the chosen location:
Option 1: Rushaga (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest)
A thick, ancient rainforest where the vegetation is dense and every step feels like entering a secret world.
Option 2: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Part of the tri-border Virunga ecosystem, featuring bamboo zones, volcanic slopes, and dramatic mountain backdrops.
A Life-Changing Encounter
When you finally find the gorilla family, you spend one full magical hour observing them:
The silverback’s quiet authority

Days 10–11: Kibale Forest – The Primate Capital of East Africa
You head northeast to Kibale National Park, famous for its highest density of chimpanzees and 13 primate species.

Admire birdlife: bee-eaters, kingfishers, cormorants, and African fish eagles
Visit to the Top of the Falls
Here, the Nile squeezes through a 7-meter gap and crashes down with incredible force. Standing at the top, feeling the spray and vibrations beneath your feet, is unforgettable.
Day 14: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Completing the Big Five
On your way back toward Kampala or Entebbe, you stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos.
