Mutanda Eco Community Centre

About Mutanda Eco Community Center

Located approximately 6 kilometers from Kisoro Town in southwestern Uganda, Mutanda Eco Community Centre is a unique, community-managed eco-lodge offering affordable accommodation for travelers exploring the breathtaking Lake Mutanda region. Nestled along the southern shores of the lake, this peaceful retreat provides an ideal escape for visitors seeking tranquility away from busy town life.

The centre offers budget-friendly lodging, including well-maintained camping facilities and home-cooked meals, making it especially suitable for travelers on Uganda safaris. Its strategic location near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park makes it a convenient base for gorilla trekking adventures and other wildlife experiences in the region.

Mutanda Eco Community Centre (M.E.C.C) was established by the Mutanda Community Development Organization (MCDO) in collaboration with the MbiriMbiri Foundation. The initiative was created to promote sustainable tourism while ensuring that local community members directly benefit from tourism activities around Lake Mutanda.

Beyond comfortable lodging, guests can participate in a variety of enriching activities around the lake. These include canoeing, boat rides, swimming, bird watching, otter viewing, guided village walks, nature walks, snake safaris, and cultural entertainment featuring traditional dances and drumming. Visitors can also engage in hands-on experiences such as arts and crafts making with local artisans.

For those interested in meaningful travel experiences, the centre offers volunteer opportunities within the community. Visitors can contribute by teaching conservation education at nearby Chihe Primary School, offering swimming lessons to children from surrounding villages, or supporting local health centres.

Mutanda Eco Community Centre is more than just a place to stay—it is a gateway to authentic community interaction, sustainable tourism, and the natural beauty of Lake Mutanda.

Accomodation At Mutanda Eco Community Center

Camping Facilities

The camping areas at Mutanda Eco Community Centre are designed for travelers who want to experience the serenity of Lake Mutanda up close. Each camping spot is strategically located along the southern shores, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding Virunga foothills.

The site provides secure and shaded areas to pitch tents, protecting guests from sun and rain. Tents are spacious, weatherproof, and equipped with basic sleeping arrangements, including comfortable mattresses, bedding, and mosquito nets. Communal washrooms and shower facilities are nearby, ensuring convenience without compromising the outdoor experience.

Camping here also allows for a true connection with nature—guests can fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the lake and wake up to breathtaking sunrises over the volcanoes. Nighttime activities may include campfires, storytelling, and star gazing.

Eco-Lodges & Cabins

For travelers seeking a bit more comfort, the centre offers eco-lodges and wooden cabins. These accommodations are built using locally sourced materials to blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings, promoting sustainability.

Each cabin is cozy yet spacious, furnished with comfortable beds, bedside tables, and simple storage for personal items. Large windows or private verandas allow guests to enjoy panoramic views of Lake Mutanda, the lush hills, and distant volcano peaks.

Some cabins feature private bathrooms with hot and cold running water, while others use shared bathroom facilities nearby. The cabins are perfect for couples, families, or small groups looking for a quiet retreat while staying close to nature.

Community-Style Dining & Meals

Guests at the centre enjoy fresh, home-cooked meals prepared by local chefs using ingredients sourced from the surrounding community. Breakfasts often include fruits, local bread, and porridge, while lunch and dinner feature traditional Ugandan dishes, such as matoke (steamed plantains), fresh fish from the lake, beans, and locally grown vegetables.

Dining takes place in communal areas or open-air dining spaces, allowing visitors to socialize with other guests, share experiences, and immerse themselves in the local culture. Special arrangements can be made for dietary preferences, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Ideal Base for Safari Visitors

The centre’s proximity to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park makes it an excellent base for gorilla trekking safaris and other wildlife adventures. Guests can enjoy early morning departures to the parks, returning to the comfort of the centre after a day of trekking.

The location also provides easy access to Lake Mutanda activities, including canoeing, boat rides, swimming, fishing, and guided nature walks. Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts can spot rare species such as otters, herons, and a variety of colorful birds around the lake.

Volunteer-Friendly Accommodation

Visitors participating in the centre’s volunteer programs can stay comfortably on-site. Volunteer activities include teaching at nearby schools, assisting with swimming lessons for children, participating in conservation education, or supporting local health centers.

Accommodation for volunteers is integrated with regular lodging, allowing for interaction with other guests while providing a safe and welcoming environment. This setup encourages cultural exchange and offers a deeper understanding of the local community and conservation efforts.

Overall, Mutanda Eco Community Centre offers a blend of adventure, tranquility, and cultural immersion, making it a perfect destination for eco-tourists, safari enthusiasts, and travelers seeking a meaningful experience by the lake.

Location and Distance from Kigali International Airport

Mutanda Eco Community Centre is situated in the scenic region of South-western Uganda, along the shores of Lake Mutanda, approximately 180 kilometers (about 3.5–4 hours’ drive) from Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Rwanda.

Travelers typically drive northwest from Kigali, crossing into Uganda via the Cyanika Border near Kisoro. The route is scenic, passing through lush hills, tea plantations, and the picturesque countryside, offering travelers stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes and surrounding landscapes.

This convenient proximity makes Mutanda Eco Community Centre an ideal stopover for tourists planning gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or exploring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, while still enjoying the tranquil beauty of Lake Mutanda.
